Award Winners from across the United States will be honored in Washington, D.C., during National Small Business Week on April 30th and May 1st.

Ahead of National Small Business Week (NSBW), the U.S. Small Business Administration has announced this year’s Small Business Person(s) of the Year winners – over 50 outstanding small business owners and entrepreneurs from across the United States, including the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Matthew and Jesse Faul, owners of Red E LLC, have been selected as North Dakota’s 2023 Small Business Person(s) of the Year.

“With all the great businesses in North Dakota to choose from, we are humbled and honored to be selected for such an award,” said Matthew Faul, Founder and President of Red E LLC, a Fargo-based company. “The local Fargo-Moorhead community, the state of North Dakota, and the entire region has been a great place to live and have a business. We have certainly put in a lot of hard work, but the credit goes to the good Lord and the many people who have invested in us from the beginning.”

Matthew started his career as a Project Engineer for Amity Technology before founding Red E as an engineering services firm in 2012. Tools Required

*Dependent on whether supplied with standard or metric bolt kit

Design Characteristics

  • Precision machined stainless steel bushing for longer life & corrosion resistance
  • Grade 8 hardware for longer life
  • Grade 8 seed tube bolt with pre-applied anti-seize included

Step-by-Step Instructions

Excessive vertical play at the end of a seed boot affects seed depth placement and germination consistency. Red E’s Heavy Duty Extended Wear Seed Boot Bushing Kit allows for the rehabilitation of worn seed boot pivots and results in a seed boot pivot tighter than factory new row units. Vertical up and down movement or play of more than ¾” at the end of the seed boot indicates the pivot and/or seed boot has worn significantly and needs to be fixed. A drill guide block kit should be used when drilling out row unit casting holes to ensure the proper alignment of boot to disc is achieved after drilling.

  1. Remove gauge wheel, disk and seed boot

Remove gauge wheel, disc, and seed boot to allow proper access to boot pivots.
NOTE: Seed boots can be heated around seed tube bolt location to aid in removing difficult and seized seed tube bolts.

  2. Install drill guide block

Install drill guide block as shown. Tighten bolts until snug. DO NOT over-tighten as overtightening can cause drill bushings to be misaligned and make drilling the hole very difficult.
How to Install Seed Boot Bushings

  3. Apply cutting fluid

Apply a generous amount of PB Blaster, WD-40, or similar cutting fluid to the inside of the holes to be drilled.

  4. Drill holes

Align drill bit to drill bushings. Set drill to slowest speed and maintain a consistent feed rate while drilling. It is very important to apply force to the drill in a straight manner to not side-load the drill bit and make drilling difficult.
NOTE: Select a heavy-duty drill and drill bit. We recommend a DEWALT Model DWD210G or DWD216G 10 Amp 1/2-inch chuck drill, or similar, and a high quality 5/8” drill bit such as Red E’s custom 4 flute bit, a Champion Cutting Tool BlackGold XG12-5/8 bit, or similar. Under extreme and difficult situations, a 9/16 drill bit can be used to pre-drill the hole to ease the final drilling with a 5/8 drill bit.
NOTE: When drilling, it is recommended to position yourself behind the row unit and pull the drill toward you while drilling the hole.
How to Install Seed Boot Bushings

  5. Complete next row

Remove drill guide block and move to next row.

  6. Place bushing in drilled hole

Drive bushing into drilled hole. A bushing driver or extra bolt can be used for driving in all bushings to protect the bushing during install. Do not pound directly on the bushing face with a hammer.
How to Install Seed Boot Bushings
When installed, bushing should be centered between cast arm flanges and flush with the outside flange faces as shown below.
How to Install Seed Boot Bushings
NOTE: Apply anti-seize with pipe brush to inside of boot bushing before installing boot bolt.

  7. Assemble seed boot and spring with new hardware

Assemble seed boot and boot spring along with new hardware. Ensure seed boot pivots and functions properly, and that all components are installed.
How to Install Seed Boot Bushings
NOTE: Complete 1 row of drilling, bushing install, and complete re-assembly of row to verify final fit and proper function before proceeding with rest of machine row drilling. Red E 4 flute drill bits can be carefully resharpened by hand in the event tip becomes chipped or dull.

Tools Required

  • Size 9/16, 11/16, 3/4, 7/8 open-end wrenches
  • Size 2.5mm and 6mm Allen Wrenches

Parts Required (included in AG-K18)

  • Hydraulic Work Switch
  • Hydraulic “T” Fitting
  • Hydraulic Adapter Fitting
  • Thread Sealant/Tape

Step-by-Step Instructions

Typical factory mechanical work switches on most seeding implements have an inherent delay when raising or lowering the openers which causes excess seed or fertilizer product to be discharged on the ground before and after each pass in the field, typically at the headlands.

The Red E hydraulic work switch kit, however, engages or disengages the seed delivery system the moment a pressure change is detected in the hydraulic lift circuit thereby greatly increasing the accuracy of your desired start/stop seeding times and minimizing product waste. Installation is simple and typically connected in line next to the hydraulic control block.

  1. Determine if machine is 2 pin or 3 pin style
Note: Due to the many diverse machine models and configurations available, you may be required to reconfigure or purchase your own applicable electrical connections. It is entirely possible that there are male pins in a male Weatherpack (WP) socket on the OEM harness which would require changing out hydraulic work switch ends (male and male won’t work).
TIP: Temporarily wire switch to drill harness to verify proper function before connecting pins into WP shroud plugs. If backwards, display will indicate machine in up position when it is actually down. If this happens you will need to switch green and red wires on the hydraulic work switch side.

The hydraulic switch comes with a 2-pin and 3-pin Weatherpack (WP) shroud (black casing) tied to the end of the electrical cable. There are 3 different wires coming from the hydraulic work switch: red, green, and black. Determine if your machine configuration is a 2 pin or 3 pin style.

2 PIN STYLE: The black wire/pin should be installed in the B location and is always used. If the switch is “normally open”, fully insert the RED pin into slot A as shown in Figure 2 and 3. The green wire is for systems that have a “normally closed” circuit (do not connect this wire/pin in a “normally open” circuit).
3 PIN STYLE: (Some JD Drills) The black hydraulic work switch wire should be connected to the brown wire, and red to red. The green wire will not be used and should be left unconnected. If possible, plug the unused electrical socket end. If applicable, the electrical casing may then be closed to create a tight seal.
Figure 2: 2 Pin WP Shroud
    AG-K18 Hydraulic Work Switch

Figure 3: 3 Pin WP Shroud
    AG-K18 Hydraulic Work Switch

  2. Pre-assemble fittings

Pre-assemble fittings. Note: the adaptor fitting requires Thread Sealant/Tape on the NPT end. Tighten all fittings using the appropriate open-end wrenches.

  3. Verify supplied hydraulic fittings will work with configuration

Note: Verify supplied hydraulic fittings will fit your configuration. Due to the many diverse machine models and configurations available, you may be required to supply or purchase your own necessary hydraulic fittings.

  4. Install switch

The Switch should be installed in line on the pressure side of the hydraulic lift circuit. For JD drills the most convenient location is on the front of the drill. This is typically located at the back of the down pressure valve block, shown in Figure 4. Simply remove the hydraulic hose, install the hydraulic work switch assembly, & re-attach lift circuit hose. Remember to tighten all connections.
Figure 4: Common Lift Circuit Location
    AG-K18 Hydraulic Work Switch

Additional Notes

  • The switch can be tied in anywhere within the lift circuit as required.
  • On dual rank drills, there can be multiple work switches on the machine. You must select which work switch to tie into and make sure the other switch is disabled. Reference your machine’s owner’s manual.
  • Temporarily wire switch and run tractor to verify proper function before final seating of electrical plugs in sockets.
  • When possible, leave the factory harness plug intact so that the hydraulic work switch can be quickly unplugged and returned back to the original factory configuration by plugging OEM back into OEM mechanical work switch connector.
  • The Hydraulic Work Switch Kit is not recommended for some hoe drills as any leak down of the lift circuit could trip the switch.

Pressure Adjustment

If pressure adjustment is required: Loosen set screw using a 2.5mm Allen wrench. Use 6mm Allen wrench to adjust switching pressure. Adjust switch setting to desired pressure (switch range must not exceed 500-3600 psi). Retighten set screw.

Fall is here and you may have noticed a few things that should be changed on your air seeder – or at least you think they do. It’s ready for some new parts but are you prepared with the parts you need and how to install them?

What Products Do You Need?

Whether you’re just replacing the discs to freshen up your drill or overhauling every row unit so they are as good or better than new  – planning ahead is a must.  Start with our patent pending drill inspection tool to identify the life on the most common wear items such as discs and seed tabs.  A great value Red E also provides is free on-site inspections to help educate what to look for and what should be the priority for your air seeder.

How Much Time Do You Have?

Winter to-do lists are usually a mile long for most farmers and it’s a rush to get everything done before it’s time to hop in the tractor again.  With 100-200 hours required on an average rebuild, how likely will rebuilding your air seeder get crossed off that winter list?  And if we are honest with ourselves, crawling underneath an air drill isn’t one of those things we willingly want to do. Think about the resources that will be needed such as a heated shop, tools, experience, etc.

To ensure your seeder will be ready for the next seeding season, rely on the Red E rebuild crew to get it done on time and correctly.

Is Your Current Air Seeder Meeting Your Needs?

Looking to upgrade to a larger machine? Needing an air cart with a bigger bushel capacity? Red E has a large network of farmers across North America and access to a variety of used equipment privately for sale. Take a look at our current used inventory or call us with your air seeder needs – we have trustworthy options available!

Tools Required

  • Ratchet or Impact (Optional)
  • M17 Wrench
  • M17 Socket
  • 5/8” or M19 Socket*
  • 11/16” or M19 Wrench*

*Dependent on whether OEM bolt is standard or metric

Design Characteristics

  • No drilling or machining required
  • Can be re-adjusted if it becomes loose after use
  • Grade 8 Hardware for longer life
  • Patent # 9,485,903

Step-by-Step Instructions

Time needed: 20 minutes

The Pro-Stitch Seed Boot Stabilizer is a patented solution designed to eliminate the up and down movement of the seed boot and allow for a more consistent furrow and more even seed placement. The simple bolt-on design fits between the main opener arm boot pivot flanges and the seed boot.

  1. Remove gauge wheel, cutting disc and seed tube

Remove gauge wheel, cutting disc, and seed tube to allow proper access to boot pivots. Removing the seed tube by removing the seed tube bolt will make the installation easier but is not required due to the addition of the clevis pin. The boot stabilizer can be installed on a row unit that is either still on the machine or on a work bench.

  2. Thread nuts onto bolts

Thread the jam nuts onto bolts. Then, insert bolts into the two threaded holes on the top of the stabilizer. Do not tighten jam nuts yet. Ensure bolts are not sticking too far past bottom of “T” of stabilizer casting.

  3. Insert boot stabilizer casting

Place boot stabilizer casting between the opener arm cast ears so that it aligns with desired hole. Ensure the STABILIZER lettering is facing outwards to allow proper clerance between the clevis pin and the seed boot casting.

  4. Position boot spring and clevis pin

Place long side of boot spring in position on seed boot and hold with one hand while using other hand to install clevis pin (RE5016) through the seed boot, row unit casting, and stabilizer holes.

TIP: Get pin started in front half of casting and then apply leverage against boot while pushing on the pin to get it through the entire casting. With the right amount of hand pressure, angle, leverage, and wiggle this will go smoothly.

  5. Install cotter pin

Once the clevis pin is installed, install the cotter pin to hold the clevis pin in place. Ensure head of clevis pin is flush against seed boot so that the seed tube can be installed later. Note that the clevis pin may be installed from either direction. A bolt may also be used in place of the clevis pin.

  6. Tighten bolts and jam nuts

Tighten top bolts to lock the clevis pin up. Then tighten jam nuts to keep the bolts in place thus securing the stabilizer in place. (See below diagram)

NOTE: RE5022 may be shipped as either a hairpin (left) or a locking cotter pin (right), as shown below. Both variations of the pin are acceptable for use. The hairpin may be installed all the way to the final loop for added holding power.

NOTE: Top bolts need to be tightened to 15 ft-lb. Any more than 25 ft-lb may cause clevis pin to excessively bend and not work properly.

  7. Ensure parts function properly

Ensure seed boot pivots, springs back, functions properly, and all components are properly tightened. Ensure there is no binding and that the boot has good spring tension against the cutting disc. Usually binding is caused by over torquing top bolts or by boot spring not being installed correctly. See picture for completed install of stabilizer. Seed tube and other remaining components can now be re-installed on row unit.

NOTE: On 60 series drills that have the original 60 series style seed boots, the long leg of the seed boot spring may need to be trimmed down ~1/8” to allow adequate clearance and prevent binding of spring when the stabilizer is installed.
To verify: Trim 1 boot spring, install on 1 row, and verify seed boot spring back and proper functionality. Adjust as needed for remaining rows.
